Lagu ini merupakan salah satu puji-pujian tertua yang masih tetap dinyanyikan sampai sekarang. Lirik lagu ini diambil dari kata-kata terakhir yang diucapkan seorang lelaki berasal dari Assam (sebuah desa di Timur Laut India). Dia bersama keluarganya memutuskan menerima Tuhan Yesus pada pertengahan abad ke 19. Kepala suku Assam memaksanya untuk meninggalkan imannya, namun lelaki itu berkata "I have decided to follow Jesus" = "Mengikut Yesus Keputusanku". Walaupun kepala suku dan penduduk mengancam akan memenggal kepalanya, namun lelaki itu tidak gentar dan tetap berkata "Though no one joins me, still I will follow" = "Tetap Kuikut Walau Sendiri".
Isterinya telah dibunuh karena iman mereka dan pada akhirnya lelaki itupun dieksekusi ketika sedang menyanyikan "The cross before me, the world behind me" yang artinya "Salib di depan, dunia di belakang". Demonstrasi iman lelaki ini telah membawa kepala suku dan semua penduduk desa bertobat dan mengikut Yesus.
Seorang editor pujian-pujian William Jensen Reynold membuat arrangement lagi ini dan pada tahun 1959 dimuat di dalam Buku Lagu Persekutuan. Waktu masih duduk di sekolah Minggu, lagu ini adalah salah satu favorit walau ketika itu kita pasti belum mengerti makna kata-kata dari lagu ini. Kiranya lagu ini menjadi hidup yang kita jalani dari hari ke hari pada saat ini.
